about the show

THE UNDERDOG SHINES

A queer Latino-Filipino underdog confronts rejection, cultural shame, and survival in a movement-driven theatrical journey. Through storytelling, music, and lived experience, The Underdog Shines (El Desvalido Brilla) transforms memory into performance and hidden wounds into sources of strength.

ABOUT THE TITLE: S(HE) IS NOT (S)HE

Have you ever felt like people saw only part of who you are?

S(HE) IS NOT (S)HE reflects the space between how the world defines us and how we define ourselves. Throughout The Underdog Shines, characters navigate identity, family, culture, and belonging while learning that the labels placed on us rarely tell the whole story.

Like the play itself, the title embraces complexity instead of easy answers.

ABOUT JR ESCOBAR

JR Escobar is a Bay Area playwright, performer, and advocate whose work celebrates the resilience of underdogs. As a child, JR struggled with reading, writing, and speech and was often terrified of speaking in public. Those early challenges eventually became the foundation of a career built around storytelling, performance, and advocacy.

Drawing from Filipino and Salvadoran heritage, lived experience, and a lifelong belief in the resilience of underdogs. Escobar explores themes of identity, survival, and belonging while asking what happens when the parts of ourselves we were taught to hide become our greatest source of strength.
